What does New Zealand have in common with scenic and famously luxurious destinations like St Barths, Italy, Indonesia and France? Exclusivity and unabashed opulence, as voted by one of the world’s leading authorities on luxury travel.

Three exclusive New Zealand lodges were recently recognised as being among the best in the world, with the release of Andrew Harper’s Hideaway Report on the Top 20 International Hideaways. Christchurch’s Otahuna Lodge was voted into second place, while Taupo’s Huka Lodge and Glenorchy’s Blanket Bay followed closely behind at numbers nine and 16 respectively.

So what is it exactly what makes these hideaways so special?

Otahuna Lodge, Christchurch

Otahuna Lodge was built in 1895 for prominent Canterbury pioneer Sir Heaton Rhodes, as an enduring testament to his love for the finer things in life. The homestead is considered one of the best examples of unspoiled Queen Anne architecture in Australasia, and offers seven individual suites set among a spectacular 30-acres of gardens.

Huka Lodge, Taupo

Founded in the 1920s, Huka Lodge is located on the banks of the Waikato River, upstream from Huka Falls, to enjoy unrivalled riverside views and ambience. Offering 17-acres of manicured grounds and 25 luxury rooms, including a secluded Owner’s Cottage, Huka Lodge has hosted guests including Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, Bill Gates, Barbara Streisand, and Billy Connolly.

Blanket Bay, Glenorchy

Celebrated as one of New Zealand’s ultimate alpine escapes, Blanket Bay is nestled amid the rugged snow-capped peaks of the Southern Alps, on the shores of Lake Wakatipu. Offering accommodation including intimate Lodge Rooms, Lodge Suites, and Chalet Suites, Blanket Bay is just 45 minutes from New Zealand’s activity and adventure centre, Queenstown.
