About the Ashburton District

Located in the central South Island, just an hour’s drive south of Christchurch, the Ashburton District is hard to bypass. Its options for adventure, entertainment and relaxation are seemingly endless, and all set amongst a colourful tapestry of farmland, interwoven with braided, fish-laden rivers.

Centred round the city of Ashburton, the district also encompasses the towns of Methven Mt Hutt Village, Mt Somers and Rakaia – each a special destination, offering a different experience. The area’s pastoral backbone is evident in each of the towns that dot this welcoming landscape. Visitors can immerse themselves in the rural atmosphere, with farm tours, horse treks and the opportunity to taste locally grown produce.

How do you get to Ashburton District?

  • Travel by Plane
    • Ashburton District does not have a commercial airport but can be reached within a relaxing hour's drive from Christchurch International Airport.
  • Travel by Train
    • There are no train services to the Ashburton District.
  • Travel by Bus
    • Shuttle and bus transport between Christchurch and Ashburton or Methven is regular and affordable. A number of tour buses stop or pass through the district region, and in winter there are several operators transporting passengers to Mt Hutt Ski Area.
  • Rent a Vehicle
    • A limited number of rental outlets operate in the Ashburton District. As most visitors arrive in the region by road, many have already sourced their rental vehicle from Christchurch or another South Island arrival hub.
